Right Fitting · Robustness

Your best backtest is lying to you.

The most profitable setting is almost always the most fragile. Right Fitting finds the one that will actually hold up. Instead of showing you what performed best yesterday, it identifies what's most likely to hold up tomorrow.

The trap of ranking by profit

When you optimize on cTrader, you get hundreds of results ranked by profit. The trap: the one at the top of the list is almost always overfitted — it fits the past perfectly, and only the past. The moment the market changes, it collapses.

WHAT cTRADER SHOWS

The highest profit

The best return over a past period. A tempting ranking… but one that rewards luck as much as method.

WHAT RIGHT FITTING REVEALS

What survives the test

Among those settings, which ones actually hold up when put to the test. Reliability, not illusion.

The gap is brutal

On a real optimization of 765 passes, the 10 most profitable settings according to cTrader all failed the robustness test.

765

10 / 10
top profits that failed
#93
the most solid setting, by profit

The most robust setting ranked only 93rd by profit — completely invisible in a classic ranking. Without Right Fitting, you'd have ignored it and traded a mirage instead.

How it works

Right Fitting evaluates each parameter set from two independent angles.

Plateau analysis

We shift each parameter around its optimal value and re-run a backtest for every variant. If the neighboring settings hold up as well as the central one, you're on a stable plateau: the performance is reproducible. If everything collapses at the slightest notch, it's an isolated peak — a sign of overfitting.

Walk-forward validation

We test the same parameters against several historical periods on which the strategy was never optimized. What stays profitable over these unseen periods is credible. What breaks was glued to the past.

The robustness score

Everything is condensed into a single score from 0 to 100, built from five measurable dimensions, weighted by your priorities and then adjusted by the walk-forward results. Fully traceable: you see exactly why a setting earns its grade.

ROBUSTNESS SCORE
87/ 100
FRAGILEMEDIUMSOLID
  • Plateau shape — does performance stay stable when you shift the parameters?
  • Profit quality — are the gains steady, or carried by a few lucky trades?
  • Drawdown safety — does the loss risk stay under control across all variants?
  • Trade stability — is the number of trades consistent from one variant to the next?
  • Statistical confidence — is the win rate reliable, or drawn from too small a sample?
